Duties and Responsibilities

The Public Works Department is responsible for constructing and maintaining the City’s infrastructure.  We accomplish most of this work with our employees and equipment, and the rest is contracted out to private firms (such as garbage collection and large paving projects).  In this way, our citizens receive the benefit of the best services at the least possible cost.

With the aid of a knowledgeable and experienced supervisory and administrative staff, our employees perform the following tasks:

  • Review plans and specifications to insure that proposed commercial & residential development is consistent with all regulations and master plans.  We also inspect these projects as construction progresses.
  • Office staff maintains records of current and past projects, maps, information regarding underground utilities, boundary lines, etc.
  • Maintain street markers, stop signs, and other various traffic control devices.  (This does not include traffic lights, which are maintained by Jefferson County)
  • Mechanics in our Fleet Services division of Public Works maintain and repair all City vehicles & equipment and can perform jobs that range from minor repairs to major overhauls.
  • Remove litter from roadways
  • Repair and patch roadways, including driveway tie-ins
  • Clean ditches on City rights-of-way
  • Run daily routes throughout the City to pick up and haul off brush and yard debris from residential areas.
  • Run a leaf vacuum service daily from the beginning of November through the end of January
  • Apply herbicide to right-of-way vegetation
  • Install drainage pipes, manholes, headwalls, etc.
  • Remove dead animals from roadways and rights-of-way
  • Mow grass and trim rights-of-way
  • Mosquito spraying (If Jefferson County Health Department determines there is an imminent threat of mosquito-borne illnesses)
  • City-wide Junk Cleanup of large household items twice a year (One week in April and one week in October)
