Wendell Phillips was elected to the City Council in 2004. To serve on the council, he retired from the Public Works Department October 1, 2004, after serving the City for 36 years as Public Works' Director. A life-long resident of Gardendale, Wendell and Ann [Wiginton Phillips] - his wife of 41 years - reared their 3 children [Wesley, Wendy and Wanda] in Gardendale, all three of whom graduated the University of Alabama. A graduate of Cumberland School of Law, Wesley is a local attorney, Wendy and Wanda are both Homemakers, rearing their children. Wendell has four granddaughters, Presley Anne, Marlee Reese and Whitley Faith, the daughters of Trent and Wendy Phillips Patterson; and Lilly Grace, the daughter of Kurt and Wanda Phillips Hutto..
He served in the U. S. Army from 1963 to 1965; worked for the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department from 1965 to 1968 [attaining the rank of Sergeant]; and attended Jefferson State College before coming to the City of Gardendale where he supervised the operations of the Public Works Department for 36 years.
Wendell was Safety Coordinator and Safety Committee Chairman for the City and served on numerous boards and committees during his tenure, including the Gardendale Planning & Zoning Commission, Jefferson County Personnel Advisory Council, and the Alabama Public Works Association.
As a council member, Wendell will be working with the Public Works Committee [Chairperson], Library, Park & Recreation, and Public Utilities & Inspections Committees.
He is a member of the Church of Christ and the Gardendale Chamber of Commerce.
