Community

|
|
Gardendale is
a quiet community of friendly people, shady neighborhoods, and
prosperous businesses. Our city began its life in
the 1830s as a farming community and grew steadily through the
1860s. After the Civil War,
Gardendale's population
doubled when the coal mines opened in the 1870s. By
early 1900s the town was a bustling community with saw
mills, cotton gins, merchants, churches and a school.
Until 1906, the town was called
"Jugtown"
because of a crockery jug and churn factory located
here. The name changed after a campaign was
launched to have a name more reflective of the
area. |

Neighborhoods |

|
|
Neighborhoods
in Gardendale offer tree-filled streets with homes from
"starters" to luxurious -- and everything in between,
including garden and town homes.
There
are currently approximately 1200 homes on the drawing boards and
scheduled for construction over the next two years.
Over 80% of the homes here are owner-occupied. And
over 80% of our households are married couples with family.

Schools |
|
All of our public Schools here in Gardendale consistently rank
at the top academically in the Jefferson County School
System. In 2006, the Mayor and Council created the
Citizens' Education Committee, made up of
community leaders and parents. This committee gives a
community voice to all of our schools and makes sure
the future stays bright for our children.
In
addition, the individual schools each boast very active PTAs
where combined volunteer hours number in the thousands each
semester. There are two private grade schools in
Gardendale and several private pre-schools.
