New Retail Development on Odum Road

Work began in December 2001 to clear the way for a 67-acre retail shopping complex that is now home to a new Wal-Mart Super CenterJim 'N Nick's Bar-B-Q, banks, and an animal hospital, as well as other retail stores and will eventually be home to several other restaurants, and a hotel. The development is located just south of the new Wal-Mart store and is easily visible from Interstate 65. The new Wal-Mart store, with over 204,000 square feet of shopping space, is more than double the size of the former 88,000 square-foot store. It offers groceries, gasoline, and many other goods and services not available at the former store. The new Wal-Mart occupies approximately one-third of the entire complex.   Jim 'N Nick's celebrated its Grand Opening on November 3, 2003, boasting authentic old fashioned Bar-B-Q cooked in the southern tradition.  The developers, Abernathy-Timberlake of Duluth, Georgia, are in discussions with other potential tenants to occupy the remaining parcels in the development. In conjunction with the construction of the new retail development, Odum Road has been relocated, straightened, and widened to five lanes. The "new  and improved" five-lane  portion of Odum Road begins at the existing Fieldstown Road intersection and runs south for approximately a half-mile,  where it narrows down to two lanes and continues on to Main Street. Odum Road runs through the middle of the new complex, with stores on both sides of the road. The City made the improvements to Odum Road in order to handle the increase in vehicle traffic, as well as to improve the road's driving conditions for everyday through-traffic.
